Wings of Starlight is a delightful fairytale romance, set in the world of Neverland. It is a traditional fairytale, being all about the fairies themselves and the lives they lead. It tells the story of Clarion, Princess of Pixie Hallow and soon to be Queen. Clarion is struggling to master her magic, which she will need to do if she if to take on the mantle and responsibilities of ruler, and as her coronation is looming ever closer, she is feeling the pressure to perform. Yet she cannot seem to release the magic within her. She knows its there, hidden and buried, but she can't seem to coax it out or control it when it glimmers to the surface.
As a ruler of the Spring Realms, she has heard rumours about the monsters that live in the neighbouring realm of Winter and all fairies are forbidden to cross the border. That is until the monsters of Winter cross into Spring and begin to wreak havoc. Clarion decides to go in search of the source of these monsters, to see if she can stop them and so protect her people. In doing so, she meets with Milori, the Warden of the Winter Woods and guardian of the monster's prison. Together they take on the task of trying to vanquish the monsters, and as they get to know one another better a romance blossoms, leaving Clarion to wonder if the fairies of Spring and Winter should be friends after all.
This is a very sweet book, full of rich descriptions of Pixie Hallow and the Neverland fairies. Here you will discover vibrant balls and banquets, fairy fashion a-plenty, battles with monsters, spells, magic and nightmares that don't end. Add to that, wild rides on the backs of wolves and snowy owls and you have a charming adventure with a fairytale twist. My favourite part was the descriptions of the Winter Realm, with its ice library and skating on the lake.
Wings of Starlight is a magical and engaging novel. It's perfect for the spring season and it will suit anyone who enjoys books like The Hobbit, Lord of the Rings, The Flower Fairies and of course, Peter Pan. Happy reading!
